The American Dream is easy to celebrate and hard to build. What does it actually take to turn a family business into a $3 billion company without losing what made it worth building?
In this episode of Better Experiences by Design, host Susan Quinn sits down with Matt DeSoto, President and CEO of MITER Brands, to trace the business growth strategy behind one of North America’s largest window and door companies. Their conversation covers the hard choices that carried the company through the Great Recession, the courage to set a vision and hold it, and why culture is the only thing that turns a growth strategy into lasting success.
The MITER Brands story is a family story first. DeSoto’s father joined the business in 1956, starting in janitorial work before rising to lead a division, and the family became a shareholder in 1997. When the Great Recession threatened everything, DeSoto stepped forward, printed his own business cards, and titled himself chief operating officer so the company would have a voice with its banks. What followed was a decade of deliberate simplification and a series of bet-the-farm acquisitions that grew the company to roughly $3 billion in revenue and a stated vision of building the most valued window and door brand in America.
Matt DeSoto is President and CEO of MITER Brands, a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based residential window and door manufacturer founded in 1947 and now one of the largest fabricators of vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass windows and patio doors in North America. He entered the family business during the housing boom of the mid-2000s and led it through the Great Recession, driving a multiyear simplification effort that reshaped its cost structure and margins.
Under his leadership, MITER Brands has grown to roughly $3 billion in revenue through organic growth and landmark acquisitions including Milgard, Sunrise, and PGT Innovations, backed by an equity investment from Koch Equity Development. DeSoto is guided by a vision of building the most valued window and door brand in America and a people-first belief that culture, not strategy on paper, is what drives lasting performance.
